 SIGGRAPH 2010 - DAY 2
Welcome to the second of three daily e-newsletters delivered straight to you from the floor of SIGGRAPH 2010 in Los Angeles, where the staff of Computer Graphics World is reporting on the latest and greatest computer graphics innovations. The excitement continues with a wealth of events, including a visit from NewTek guests William Shatner and Dick van Dyke, the SIGGRAPH Reception, Research Challenge, Disney Learning Challenge, and much more. Research Challenge
Research Challenge results will be presented today from 2 pm to 3:30 pm in Theater 411. In this special session, teams that have worked on this year's Research Challenge present their solutions.

Disney Learning Challenge
Final judging of the Disney Learning Challenge takes place today outside Room 408 AB. The Challenge is an open competition sponsored by Disney Research with the goal of finding new and creative ways to use technology to make learning fun for children.

Attendees with a full conference badge are invited to the SIGGRAPH Reception tonight from 8 pm to 10 pm at the Westin Bonaventure Ballroom. Mingle with the movers and synergize with the shakers as the international computer graphics community gathers for its biggest social event of the year.

Posters offer a lightweight, low-tech method for presenting student, in-progress, and late-breaking work. Posters are displayed throughout the conference for attendees to browse at their leisure.

Computer Animation Festival
SIGGRAPH invites attendees to immerse themselves in some of the world’s most innovative and stimulating computer-generated animation and visual effects.

Nvidia Invite
Nvidia is showing off a host of new Quadro solutions, announcing new developments with ray tracing, and featuring some cool systems from Dell and HP, plus display solutions from Barco.
Shotgun Developer Meeting
Shotgun is hosting a developer user group meeting today from 4:30 pm to 6 pm in Room 505.
Chaos Group and CGschool Training and Free Book
In partnership with CGschool, Chaos Group presents a V-Ray training workshop. The Best of V-Ray will be shown by Brian Smith at an exclusive 8-hour, live training event today in Room 518, second floor from 10 am to 6 pm.
Pixologic Presents
Pixologic is hosting hourly demonstrations at booth #709, where attendees, users, and newcomers can see and explore the latest ZBrush 4.0 features, presented live by industry-renowned character modeling artists and supervisors from Disney Animation Studios, Blur Studios, Naughty Dog, and other top film and gaming studios.
Maxon and Motion Graphics
Maxon will participate in the SIGGRAPH Motion Graphics Birds of a Feather session today from 1 pm to 3 p.m. in Room 301 B.
Escape Studios Events

Celebrity Sitings

Legend 3D
Legend 3D, having grown from a staff of 40 to more than 250, has become the largest 2D-to-3D conversion company in the nation, with the aid of Southpaw Technology and Integrated Media Technologies (IMT), says a company spokesperson.

Polhemus G4
Polhemus has launched G4, the next-generation wireless 6 Degree-of-Freedom motion tracking tool with AC electromagnetic technology.

StudioGPU MachStudio Pro 2
StudioGPU, intending to redefine productivity for 3D artists working in broadcast, cinema, and design, has unveiled StudioGPU MachStudio Pro 2 real-time nonlinear 3D workflow and rendering software. StudioGPU is previewing the workflow benefits of MachStudio Pro 2 on the latest ATI FirePro 3D workstation graphics accelerators in the AMD booth (# 301) during SIGGRAPH 2010.

NewTek LightWave 10
NewTek, provider of 3D animation and video products, has announced NewTek LightWave 10, the next generation of its professional 3D modeling, animation, and rendering software. LightWave 10, combining CORE Technology with enhanced Modeler and Layout, is being considered the most extensive upgrade in years to LightWave’s production-proven workflow.

Spheron-VR AG is presenting its latest version of the HDR Camera – the SpheroCamHDR. The technology has grown, as has its adoption within the VFX industry. It is today being used by many industry players, such as: The Mill – London for 3D advertising productions and Sony Pictures Imageworks for use in the production of major Hollywood feature films.

Chaos Group Developments
Chaos Group (booth #612) is holding live demonstrations and real-world V-Ray production workflow discussions by experts in the film and VFX, architectural, and automotive industries, including Brian Smith from 3DATS; Oliver Heijmans, senior lighter/R&D from Mr. X; Kevin Margo, CG supervisor from Blur Studio; and many others.

Southpaw at SIGGRAPH
Southpaw Technology, intent on delivering “a new breed of asset management,” is announcing its Tactic 3.0 asset management/collaboration software in booth #205. The new version is designed to provide studios with a more open, flexible solution for speeding the creation of digital assets across highly complex digital productions, like those found in feature film, visual effects, animation, and cinematics studios.

The Pixel Farm at SIGGRAPH

Print 3D Objects in Glass with Shapeways
Shapeways, an online marketplace that offers affordable access to the latest 3D printing technologies, has added Milky White Matte Glass to its suite of materials available for personal production. Shapeways’ commercial service enables 3D designers to manufacture glass objects for both their personal use and to be sold in the Shapeways online shops.
Escape Studios and The Mill Launch Online Competition
Escape Studios has launched a new online competition designed to discover the rising stars of computer graphics design in the United Kingdom and United States. The CG Graduate Design Awards is an international competition that, with help from sponsor The Mill, aims to uncover fresh computer graphics talent just graduating from college on both sides of the Atlantic.

Autodesk Mobile Games Curriculum and Instructor Certification
Autodesk Inc. has released three new training modules as part of the Autodesk Animation Academy 2011 curriculum for secondary schools. The modules provide students with tools and a curriculum to help develop the skills needed to create mobile game applications.

MachStudio Pro with Pixar RenderMan Support
StudioGPU has announced that its MachStudio Pro nonlinear, real-time 3D workflow and rendering software will soon support Pixar RenderMan, the Academy Award-winning rendering software in use by studios of all sizes worldwide to meet demanding 3D and animation visual effects rendering challenges.

3Dconnexion 3D Mice
3Dconnexion announces that its full line of 3D mice is supported by three new media and entertainment applications: Autodesk’s Maya 2011 and SoftImage 2011, and Adobe’s Photoshop CS5, bringing advanced 3D navigation and control to a range of digital artists and designers.

Sony Pictures Imageworks Recruiting
Sony Pictures Imageworks, the Academy Award-winning visual effects and digital character animation unit of Sony Pictures Digital Productions, is recruiting for current and upcoming productions, notably Warner Bros Green Lantern, the Aardman Animation production Arthur Christmas, Sony Pictures Animation’s Hotel Transylvania, The Smurfs in association with Columbia Pictures, and several other projects soon to be announced.

Autodesk Fluid FX App
Autodesk Inc.’s Fluid FX App—which enables users to play with a variety of digital effects, such as smoke, fire, and image warping—is now available on the App Store for use on the Apple iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone.

Alembic Open-source Exchange Format
Sony Pictures Imageworks and Industrial Light & Magic announced Alembic, a co-developed, open-source project, during a press conference at SIGGRAPH 2010 in Los Angeles. The new computer graphics interchange format is designed to enable the efficient storage and exchange of animation and visual effects scenes across multiple software applications.

Jim Henson's Creature Shop Debut
For the first time ever, the Henson Digital Puppetry Studio performs a digital character in real-time stereoscopic 3D (depth effect with active shutter glasses). The Emmy-award winning technology behind the hit animated series “Sid the Science Kid” breaks new ground in real-time performed animation by rendering two full HD video streams, eye-distance apart, in parallel, to generate this new 3D experience.

Nvidia Booth with Barco Technology
Nvidia has selected Barco as its partner for displays, projectors, and image processing solutions to demonstrate its new professional graphics technology at SIGGRAPH 2010. In fact, Nvidia is using a wide range of Barco solutions to present its graphics technologies to more than 25,000 computer graphics and interactive technology professionals at the annual event.
