Thinkbox Software has launched Cinelab, a new video-editing app for Windows 8 devices that delivers simple, on-the-go video editing capabilities directly from any supported tablet, mobile device, or desktop computer. Inspired by the new Windows user interface, Thinkbox founder Chris Bond set out to design an easy-to-use editing app that would enable people of any skill level to trim and cut together clips, and share them directly from Windows 8 devices. Using a very simple touch interface, users can rearrange clips by moving them around on screen, tap them to play, and shorten the length by moving handles on a bar directly beneath the clip. Rearranged and trimmed clip sequences can be shared via SkyDrive and e-mail. A free version of Cinelab is available through the Windows Store, allowing customers to edit and share their videos; extended features are available via an upgrade through the Windows Store for $1.99.

Blackmagic Design has unveiled DaVinci Resolve 9.0.3, an update to the company’s color-correction tool that includes a new timecode feature to add timecode to non-timecode cameras, an improved CinemaDNG control palette, AAF and XML clip management, enhanced stereoscopic 3D grading, and support for XML round tripping in the new release of Final Cut Pro X Version 10.0.6. This new release software allows, for the first time, cameras that do not support timecode to be used for professional shoots and still offer accurate and synced timecode for editing and conforming. Resolve 9.0.3 is available immediately free of charge to existing DaVinci Resolve and DaVinci Resolve Lite users.

Red Giant has rolled out two new plug-ins co-produced with CrumplePop: Red Giant RetroGrade and Red Giant Carousel for FCP X. RetroGrade gives Final Cut Pro X artists the look of 8mm and 16mm film stocks. By simply dragging and dropping RetroGrade onto a clip, artists can quickly create the iconic look of Cold War-era home movies. Red Giant Carousel is a fun, plastic camera look plug-in that captures the classic look of color cross-processing, film fading, and vignettes. Recently, Red Giant partnered with CrumplePop to address the challenges of designing tools for the new the FCP X plug-in workflow and architecture, which are inherently different from other host applications, such as After Effects or Final Cut Pro 7. Red Giant RetroGrade and Carousel are available now for $49 each.
