According to Fakespace, this curved shape enables a user or users in a small area-the system is designed to be used in offices approximately 10 feet by 12 feet-to get the kind of immersive experience that is normally available only in large-scale theater-type environments. The conCAVE is especially suited to small groups or teams working together because it does not require viewers to wear stereoscopic glasses or any kind of tracking headgear.
Phillips Petroleum Company developed the technology behind the conCAVE system in order to view and interpret geophysical data, then arranged for Fakespace to manufacture and market it. Phillips also wrote a software program called Seismitarium, which maps seismic data to the volume and shape of the conCAVE. Seis mitarium works with both commonly used seismic interpretation and medical imaging applications. Since the conCAVE provides an enhanced sense of depth for any 3D modeling applications, the con CAVE may be purchased either with or without the Seismitarium API.
The conCAVE system, which includes a 72-inch wide screen, a 1280- by 1024-pixel high-brightness projector, a pull-down flat screen, and the Seismitarium API software, is priced at approximately $45,000.
