CGW has officially announced RECON Labs’ 3Dpresso AI 3D model creation tool as a recipient of a CGW Silver Edge Award for SIGGRAPH 2023. Selected by CGW's editorial team, the Silver Edge Awards recognize the most innovative and impressive technologies announced or on display at the annual conference.
Out of the many exhibitors participating in SIGGRAPH’s 50th annual conference this year, CGW selected 10 companies for their outstanding technological achievements. These best-of-show selections demonstrate remarkable advancements in the field of computer graphics.
About RECON Labs’ 3Dpresso AI 3D Model Creation Tool
Seonghoon (Vincent) Ban at RECON Labs was showing a new 3D scanning service called 3Dpresso at SIGGRAPH 2023. While at first glance it just looked like a 3D object scanning setup, on closer inspection of the 3D scanned model, I was really impressed. He was getting full color, very detailed 3D scans that were even carrying over fine textures and details, which is actually a lot harder to do than you might think. But I didn’t even see a scanner, just a poseable figure in a small white photobooth on a turntable.
So when Vincent took out his phone and said you could just shoot one or two minutes of video from multiple angles, then upload it to 3Dpresso, and 30 minutes later it would give you this detailed, textured mesh with no holes or weird geometry, I got excited.
When I asked how much this would cost, he said $1 per scan. This has applications for creating great 3D digital assets created from real world objects as well as a lot of uses in the 3D printing world. If I get as good of results as he did, I’m sure I will be using the tool a lot. — Heath Firestone
