Student Volunteer Blog #6
Posted By Ashley Marie Samour| August 10, 2009
I am a rising sophomore at the Miami International University of Art and Design. My focus is VFX and Motion Graphics along with 3D Animation. My passion for these artistic disciplines seems to grow each day as I enter a classroom or begin a new project. Imagining the countless opportunities and amazing career possibilities of doing what I enjoy most is a unique perception that, I know, very few sh ...

Student Volunteer Blog #7

Wednesday/Thursday/Friday Tuesday evening marked the end of the Fjorg adventure, and from then on the room next to the Geek Bar Voodoo Lounge was transformed into Gamejam. Gamejam, being an entirely different beast than Fjorg, required different mascots. Since Gamejam is a sort of sneaky contest all in its own, for obvious reasons Vikings don’t quite fit the whole ‘sneakiness’ option. So what sort ...

Will Wright, Partly Cloud, Robots, Cyborgs, and the Final Frontier
Posted By Josh Corken| August 07, 2009
Tuesday, the Exhibition opened. The line started to form at least 30 minutes before the floor actually opened, but we were able to watch Autodesk's demo reel from where we were standing. Autodesk always has one of the best spots at the exhibition. Probably because they dominate the 3D software world. No big deal. What was the first thing we did when they let us in? What do you think?! We rushed to ...

CGTalk Meetup
Posted By Josh Corken| August 06, 2009
Every year CGSociety's forums decide to pull together at SIGGRAPH and plan an event to plug the user names from the forums to the real life faces. Not everyone uses their face as an avatar. Actually, come to think of it, a lot of the users decide to hide their faces. I'm not sure why. Scared of the internet stalkers out there? I dunno. This year's Meetup was held at New Orlean's Acme Oyster House. ...

Student Volunteer Blog #5

Having been born a time when it is common knowledge that the world is round and not flat, it seems absurd to think otherwise. It seems that the most genius developments in history are the ones that seem the most obvious to us in hindsight. Naturally, I feel the same way about Sim City, The Sims, and Spore. Will Wright, the creator of these brilliant games, or rather, software toys, because their o ...

Although, the conference didn't officially begin until Monday, CGW was kind enough to present student volunteers with an exclusive panel of speakers discussing their work and giving advice about the industry on Sunday night. Aside from the bitterly air conditioned lecture hall, the talk was extremely rewarding and I felt lucky to have been present at this special early session. The speakers were J ...

Pixar's latest short, Partly Cloudy, was yet another cinematic masterpiece from the company that can do no wrong. You may be surprised to learn that Peter Sohn, although he had worked in at Pixar for nine years, was a first time director with this project. On Tuesday afternoon he spoke a full house about how his vision developed and what he learned from the project. The best thing about this talk ...

Monday and Tuesday Smiling faces, giddy laughter and the occasional, “FJORG!” fill the New Orleans convention center walls as soon as one walks through the promising glass doors. Exhibitors rush to their booths, speakers hurry to their respective rooms, and in the midst of it all the student workers are planted, carefully assuring that all of this goes off without a hitch. I stepped into the conve ...

SIGGRAPH 2009 in New Orleans
Posted By Joshua B. Corken| August 05, 2009
Well, to be honest it's not small at all. The Special Interest Group on GRAPHics and Interactive Techniques, shortened to SIGGRAPH for obvious reasons, got its start in 1974 and has grown to see attendance numbers rise to 40,000 people. That's a lot of computer geeks! This year, the city of New Orleans, LA will be hosting the 36th international conference. But we couldn't be more proud of what we ...
